Wines from Burgundy continue to lead the category of white premium wines at auctions, according to the auction house iDealwine. In 2024, a total of 26,657 bottles of white wine from Burgundy were sold at iDealwine auctions. This is an increase of 37 percent compared to 2023.

Converted to 0.75-liter bottles, 3,700 of those were Grand Cru wines. Of these, 61 percent came from the Côte de Beaune, 39 percent from Chablis, and just under one percent from the Côte de Nuits. The most expensive white wine at an iDealwine auction in 2024 was a 2005 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine d’Auvenay (image). It sold for 16,875 euros. This is 300 percent more than the price estimate made five years ago. The average price for a white Grand Cru from Burgundy in 2024 was 459 euros per bottle. This makes it almost twice as expensive as the overall average of all Burgundy wines at around 250 euros.

Other French regions are also increasing their share of white wine sales, according to iDealwine co-founder Angélique de Lencquesaing, including the Loire, Rhône, Savoie, and Jura. There is "a clear shift in consumer preferences towards fresh, elegant, and aromatic white wines" to be observed. Overall, white wines accounted for almost 29 percent of all bottles sold at iDealwine auctions last year.
