30 wineries from the Mosel wine-growing region have joined forces to form the "Maxime Herkunft Mosel" association. They want to apply the three-tier classification model of estate, local and site wines. In order not to have to establish a new term on the market, they entered into a partnership with the "Maxime Herkunft Rheinhessen" association, which has been in existence for five years. Both regions now want to work together on the origin model and on sharpening the profiles of both regions.

The assortment structure is to correspond to the model of a three-level pyramid: Estate wines as the winegrower's calling card; local wines come from the best vineyards within a locality with a clear terroir character. Riesling, Elbling and Burgundy varieties are permitted for this purpose. They may not be marketed before 1 April and must come from producer bottlings.

single vineyards are subject to much stricter regulations than the laws stipulate. They come from single vineyards with special geological and climatic conditions. Yield reduction and selective harvesting are mandatory. Only the grape varieties Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir are permitted in this category. Marketing may not take place before 1 September. "The environmentally friendly and sustainable cultivation of the vineyards is also a top priority for all members," emphasised Chairman Gerrit Walter.

Secretary Karl-Josef Thul sets the goal of "getting all the top wineries in the region on board". VDP wineries are currently not allowed to join the Maxime Herkunft Mosel, as this is not permitted by the VDP Mosel statutes. It still has to be clarified how a cooperation could look like. However, some of the wineries in the new association are members of the Bernkasteler Ring e.V.
